I know of 8 houses less than 5 years old with cracks along the entire length of the slab I can put my finger in some of them. We all know how much help the owners are getting.

Probably doesn’t help that we put foam blocks in our slabs now instead of concrete so China can use all the worlds concrete to make bridges to nowhere and houses that nobody lives in.

Sh*t c*nts building in the swamp wouldn't have anything to do with it would it? None of the places I mentioned above are occupied by the owner they are all rentals the first one I saw the landlord was blaming the tennats for cracking the slab nothing to do with the sh*test area and the cheapest builder that is now bankrupt and in hiding.

The foam is a insulator but the concrete should not crack, either the slab design is wrong, not enough rebar or wrong grade concrete.

edit: They use the same system here in NZ, always see styrofoam blocks go down before the concrete poor.

A sparky mate of mine was did a huge fit out on a high end build a few years ago but before the place got the final sign off the slab cracked and in the end the house got demolished. The owner told my mate he could take what ever he wanted from the place before the demolition crews came in.

Or putting too much foam in to decrease concrete costs.

But that is someone deviating from either accepted design practices or someone deviating from the plans.

I do find it interesting thought, you watch a pad or foundation been poured here in NZ and then watch a building show from Britain and see how big/deep their foundations are. No wonder their housing lasts centuries.....

When we built the deck out the front of our place I went overkill on all the pilings that went in. The joke is, if/when Auckland is struck my a earthquake (it won't, it'll be a volcanic eruption), the house might fall down but I'll still have my deck!

We know a couple who built a house here in Ipswich as an investment property. Within a year one side of the house subsided by 100 mm and that was just in the lounge. In that time they separated and wouldn't talk to each other. They could have made a claim but because they wouldn't talk to each other they didn't. They then had to sell the house and lost a lot of money. From memory the house cost $480,000 and sold for $330,000.
