i'm refering to the ss's
You should have specified that. Although, the Series 2 have the 6L, so stilll kinda different. Either way, the op has edited his post now, he's only after SV6 info (So VY S pac compared to VZ SV6 as they changed the name of that model)

VZ S ute
A newer car for the same price? why not go the VZ?

I got a lesson in the alloytec's power coming home from work today. I went along the quieter road behind the workshops and dropped into 2nd at 50. At 3/4 throttle, it sounds awesome, goes awesome and feels awesome. Sure the ecotec may be a bigger engine, but it most certanly does not have anything over the alloytec.

Also try to get in Manual, they hold their value better than autos plus they're more fun. So are utes (just quietly)

what the difference in the straight vy to the vy 2 series II ? mine's a 2004 or when you work out the vin numbers it's 2004 but when you look at the plate under the bonnet it says made in 2003 but you can't get a vy s series II in 2003 ! but i had to get it registered saying it was a 2003 !

lol thanks.

I just thought of another (somewhat controversial on here!) side note... If you want a big six cylinder car, get a BA or BF falcon hahaha. I've got a BF ute for work and although i've always liked holdens better, still do and probably always will, but I have to say, ford did a brilliant job of the BA/BF. They really are a damn good car and much better value than the equivalent VY/VZ. Also, they don't to suffer the mandatory every 100,000km or less head gasket failure like the EA-AU crapbomb fords. My 06 BF is dedicated LPG which has 156kw compared to the petrol version which has 182 or 190 or something. can't remember. The 4 litre twin cam ford will leave a VY/VZ behind and then some. They have a massive amount more torque even if the kw are almost comparable. Even my dedicated gas ute is quicker than a VY/VZ haha. The ford six is so so so much better/smoother/more powerful/quieter/etc than an alloytec/ecotec. I just don't like the drive by wire throttle is the only thing, but the VZ has that too.

VZ
I'm a bit bias when i say this, but i would personally go with the VZ, the front looks nicer and i thought the alloytec went quite well - but you do have to give it some revs

I almost bought the Ford without giving two shits about Holden. I'm glad the Holden was my choice because the BA or BF is only going to cause issues in the future. A good manual BA is going to cost more than the Holden and not as much resale value. I looked at a BA XR6 and my Ford guy looked at it and warned me about power loss and suspension sagging. Take from the experts I guess.

But definately the VZ.

I haven't owned either a VY or VZ, but i've done a decent amount of driving in a VY, and also driven a VZ. I was quite dissapointed with the VZ alloytec. I was expecting it to be much better. In my opinion the alloytec in the VZ is a "downgrade" on the old ecotec VY. That might sound strange but let me explain.

The VY was much more responsive off the line, where as the VZ you need to rev the nuts off it to make it move. That wouldn't be such a downer if it sounded nice, but the alloytec sounds more like my mum's 30 year old sewing machine than a sweet revving V6. (eg: any toyota V6 of the last 20 years or even late 90's magna V6's  are far superior to the alloytec IMO!).

The VZ alloytec has a fairly even torque spread. It makes close to its peak torque in a lot of the rev range which should be a good thing. But the feeling I got after stepping out of a VZ, this translates to - gutless everywhere.

I wouldn't say the old VY ecotec is a "superior motor" to the alloytec, because its really not. Its a bit of an old dunger really, but it does the job quite well and feels less gutless and more responsive than the alloytec. The downside of the ecotec is that its a pretty harsh motor at high revs. eg: it sounds like a conrod and pistion could come through the sump any second above of 5,000rpm, but if you don't thrash it then its not really a problem. But even still, the VZ alloytec isn't a smooth revving motor either. It is smoother than the ectotec, but still a harsh revving motor by todays standards.

So in conclusion, the VY gets my vote. It sounds better, is more responsive at low revs, uses about the same amount of fuel as the alloytec anyway, and isn't any slower. Just better to drive really lol. I may be slightly biased because I had a VS ecotec for a couple of years which was a good car, but I'm sure there'll be some VZ owners who are biased towards VZ's too, and there's nothing wrong with that either. Drive both and see which you prefer.

Wow that was a ramble and a half! I do that when i'm tired haha. Hopefully that gives you something to think about anyway.

ive ive owned a 2000 magna and my best mates missus had a v6 camry, i dont no which car u have driven but those arnt gud motors, mine blew oil and coolant smoke evry time off the lights( had only done 140000 kays) and that was typical with alot of magnas at that age as well as paint fade, **** headining.
a commodore or falcon any infact i think is a better car then any magna or camry of that age.
sorry for having a biased opinion but this is a commodore website

dunno if it was me or my mate cudnt drive an auto properly, hes got a bf xls falcon ute, xr8 exhaust sytem fitted, and i repetedly beat him in a straight line, i know its only a xls but they are lighter. he then went on to get a xr6 manual which i beat him still but only by a pube. and that was with petrol.
