What's this? I've obviously missed something, the Alpine X901D-VF is being discontinued?
What problems are people having with them, apart from lack of full HUD integration of course?

I have been waiting on reviews such as this before deciding on what system to replace the Mylink with. So thanks Stooge for taking one for the team.

Why don’t you take up Kayhan’s offer a post a review on their FB page? I am sure that there are many others out there waiting for first hand experiences as well before parting with their money.

I was also ready to pull the trigger on the Alpine as well but fortunately stumbled upon a FB page and there were many references to a new updated unit being released sometime in the future. So eagerly waiting for that.

I personally would also go for a full replacement unit over an addon. The only exception to that is for the HSV owners which have the factory EDI fitted which cannot be retrofitted to the Kayhan units due to the complexity of the connections.

Thats just a personal preference though!

@stooge... more than welcome to help work on making the newer radio systems work in VFs.

Actually, i might have confused the Alpine with the AdvancedICE unit. Sorry folks!

That said, i wouldn't want the Alpine either, $3K is just way too much & no carplay. Unless the supposed 902 update has it and is much cheaper.

I'd pay say up to $2k for an updated Alpine unit with Carplay...

If they released an "OCD edition" with full functionality and absolutely no issues/problems, I would too at $2K. Such a thing might just be a pipe dream tho. Hopefully Tazzl can get the ZB unit working without any issues, and significantly cheaper...

    Oooh!
    Now that's interdasting …
I doubt my better half would let me mess with her car though; while the concept of the maps being so out of date annoys me, in reality it's not affected us in any way.
And it's been long enough since VF's release that Alpine might have R&D'd full SatNav+HUD integration (although I kinda doubt it - it seems these are universal units & only the fascias/externals vary between the cars they're designed to fit).

Thank you for the info. I will be giving it a big miss. $1,000 + extras for flawed system to replace an outdated but functional system...

i keep forgetting to post these pictures so i figure i will post them now i remembered lol

i noticed there is a adjustment screw in a hole on the back of the screen for the brightness but it does not seem to work very well as the picture gets "washed out" when you turn it up too much but it is worth a mention for others to try if they have issues with brightness.

i took some pics of the inside of the kayhan unit and i found there was a plastic coating left on one of the heatsinks for cooling which would cause issues and the cpu cooler is pretty crap because there is no active cooling(fan) like the mylink.
the heatsink for the cpu is pretty crap and it will be interesting to see how the unit works on a 35 deg day after the vehicle is parked in the sun for a few hours.
there is a micro usb port on the android mainboard so that could be used to flash custom recovery/root.
one of the pics shows the super advanced "knot in usb cable" stopper lol.

Thanks for all the info stooge

Gee, that gives me a lot of confidience in the longevity of the product. Yet another reason not to buy.

I asked Holden and their response was absolute typical BS: "The VF Commodore MyLink system cannot be fitted with Apple Carplay or Android Auto'. And they wonder why they don't get repeat customers or improve their sales.

    Not damn at all.

I’d think as more manufacturers jump on this AC/AA upgrade path to support their current customer base, the more embarrassing Holdens standout attitude will become. Hopefully this market embarrassment will become so untenable, due to ongoing calls from disgruntled customers and media reports, that Holden attribute some lost sales to this issue and finally address it.

If Holden were smart, they’d get in front of this and offer an upgrade path sooner rather than later. After all, that’s what good will is, though Holden think good will is applying ACL. But

Guess pigs may fly sooner than Holden seeing the light

the mylink could support android being loaded directly onto it hardware wise because the hardware in the mylink is not that bad.
the problem will be the software that is on the mylink needing to be modified to support aa/cp and then there will be licencing costs involved for any of the proprietary software used.
the r&d costs along with licencing costs may outweigh the profit margin because the upgrade might not sell enough copies/units and they would never give it away for free because gm is all about profit.

you will find that holdens stance on it all will be that if you want aa or cp then you will have to buy one of their new vehicles and given the recent poor sales performance from holden they need to do anything they can to get people to buy new vehicles.

Yes, the QNX operating system and the MyLink hardware are quite capable. Frustratingly, I think QNX already has AA/AC modules. Yes, providing such to the VF will cost but not as much as the bullshit transfer price costs would indicate.

    So two words... loss leader.

It’s can’t all be about making money at every step as customers leave a brand. Existing customers need to be valued and looked after to keep them in the fold as future customers.

And one can’t expect existing customers to buy a new car just to better use their phones. Mazda and now Toyota have realised this.

Heck, with Holdens missteps before and after the close of manufacture, and the sales cliff fall, it should tell them they need to seriously lift their customer focus. Providing AC/AA upgrade path to existing vehicles is one way to focus on customers.

Let’s not forget the work @TazzI is putting in to change all this.
