Ok, so I had a problem that now seems to be fixed, sorta kinda. ABS, SRS, trac control and Engine Check coming on intermittently (basically dash going nuts) and as has been discussed elsewhere, replaced the ABS module. All seems fine now after I got another one from Pick a Part.

Except that I got the 2nd hand one from a VX that had the same part number, looked the same, bolted in the same etc, and I seem to have lost trac control, ie no response when I hit that button where I used to before. I tested the ABS and it works fine, but for obvious reasons, I am not willing to check whether I have actually lost airbags and similarly if not quite so much trac control.

Are there different ones that look the same etc but do/do not have all the features or something?

ABS has nothing to do with airbags so no need to worry about that. Some ABS modules have traction control and some don't even though they look the same, not sure about numbers.

Ahah! Thought it might be something like that. Back to pick a part and make sure that the traction control button is on the gear shift then? Or is there another way to tell?

you might have grabbed a faulty unit. Also you need the exact same unit in most cases so the numbers on the barcode on the bottom should match.

You might have to attempt a repair.

Ok, FINALLY got it sorted. It turns out that the Bosch sticker number is the important part. I got fooled because it is not visible once the part is installed. I also have unconfirmed reports from wreckers that some of them are interchangeable. IE they didn't have the exact one I wanted but wanted to sell me one that they said oughta work. I didn't try that for myself.

I repost the below which was very helpful to me from http://www.pandgmotors.com.au/diagnostics/commodore-abs-part-numbers/.

As this was a frustrating few weeks trying to identify the unit and get hold of one I have compiled the following information to assist anyone else trying to sort out their ABS problems.

You need to match the number on your module to the replacement (unless it has been superseded – check with Holden) or you will have issues.

Feel free to correct or add to this list if you want to – it may help someone else.

So I will be replacing a faulty ABS with traction control (must be this one)
    COMMODORE VT-VX V6 & V8 3.8lt & 5.0lt V8 TRACTION CONTROL 0273004348

    with one of these..
    COMMODORE VY V6 3.8lt 0273004589

I have the module still attached to the pump, the fittings look the same. I was tossing up replacing just the module or the whole thing.

Well, I can tell you that I got burnt once by an absolutely identical looking unit that bolted in just fine but had a different bosch part number. Best of luck!

Which is what I have now, so I was planning on installing the module and pump as one complete unit. So connect the hydraulic hard lines and plug in the big connector.

    Well that is the plan

you got fooled because you failed to read my post which mentions the label that is not visible unless the unit is removed is important. Why even ask if you aren't going to listen to the advice given?

Thaks to Indiana for listing the Bosch part numbers that are next to the bar code.
FYI, people reading above post, he is referring to this label on the underside of the unit.

Best of luck VT&VX but props must go to pandgmotors.com.au website, not me. I put that there because I find it very annoying when people don't end up putting in a resolution for others to see. Particularly when potential gremlins may arise.

I have been driving around with the ABS/traction module unplugged. I haven't replaced the module yet.

I also just picked a tiny jar of lead free 'Wire Glue' from Jaycar ($10) just in case I have to repair the existing module.

I am hoping that someone else has attempted a keyhole surgery job on that Aluminium Wire that develops the crack. Going for a 'search' now :D

Have a question for you, just had my A/C regassed but the compressor wont cut in when the intermittent abs module fault lights up. i am chasing one now, but i have been told the ABS module shouldn't be the cause as they are on different circuits?
    any thoughts?
i do know when the fault kicks in my temp gauge also doesn't work

it can absolutely do that, it's one of the symptoms.

    I had this problem myself.

some are interchangeable but not many.

    eg

these two are interchangeable. (I know this because these were in two of my cars). VXII Clubsport Auto and V2 Monaro Auto. Having a spare to test from another vehicle is so invaluable too.

So there may be an alternate module for you out there. General rule is stick to something that mirrors your vehicle pretty much exactly and as you can tell my two were both LS1 powered Auto's from the same year.

ironically i had a 590 sent to me when I had a broken one, it did not work so I returned it.

if it helps i used online wreckers and did eventually find the one I needed, but this was a while back.

If it also helps you can get these reconditioned, they slice the lid off and redo the connectors. (there are ridiculously thin wires - think human hair). But they normally do like a reco swapout not reco your unit.
